Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the right to question certain decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
