RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of access tunnels down to the site... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," he said. "They were among thousands of UK service members stationed over the holidays. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, after an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
