At least 13 passengers killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the year before. This project was closely associated with his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its role in national infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party urged an immediate pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "requires immediate answers."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in total adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital undertakings.
